Hacker releases 100,000 Facebook log-in credentials

The hacker, who goes by the name Hannibal, posted the credentials in four parts on Pastebin on Saturday as well as making the details available on 14 file-sharing sites.
In a note introducing the data, the hacker claimed to have 30 million email account details, 10 million bank accounts and four million credit card accounts belonging to "Arabs from all over the world."
Hannibal appeared to propose a truce, as activity from hackers targeting Israel appears to have subsided in recent days, but the hacker vowed to come to Israel's defense if needed: "If they appear again, I again come to save Israel. Trust me. I'll always be around."
Emails sent to an address provided by Hannibal in the Pastebin data were rejected by the hosting provider.
Since Jan. 13, Hannibal has released several batches of email and Facebook log-in details. Facebook officials said last week of one of the releases that less than a third of the credentials were valid, and half were not associated with Facebook accounts.
"This does not represent a hack of Facebook or anyone's Facebook profiles," according to a statement.
Facebook said it validates every single log-in attempt to the site, whether the password is right or not, in order to scan for malicious activity.
Earlier this month, a hacker going by the name "oxOmar" released tens of thousands of credit card numbers of Israeli citizens. Israel's Banking Supervision Department later said that only 15,000 of the numbers were active.
Shortly after that release, someone going by the name Omer Cohen, or "0xOmer" on Twitter, released 400 credit card numbers and expiration dates belonging to Saudi Arabian cardholders. Omer Cohen did not publish the CVC, the three-digit code on the back of the cards, however, needed to conduct online purchases.

Tips for Facebook Timeline Apps

Facebook opened the floodgates to its "new class of apps" Wednesday, unveiling its partnership with more than 60 applications that let users share more about their daily lives.
In September at the F8 developer conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Timeline, Facebook's new profile design, and the forthcoming apps that "let you express who you are through all the things you do," according to Facebook.
For example, rather than "liking" something as you traditionally would on Facebook, you can now show what you're doing, such as running, eating and watching, right on your timeline. These new actions are determined by the individual app.
Among the 60 new applications released yesterday are food apps Foodily, which helps you discover recipes and Snooth, a wine recommendation app; fitness app MapMyFitness, in which you log and share your fitness goals and accomplishments; and an app for Pinterest, an up-and-coming social network that creates pin boards for fashion, decorating and more.
Other categories include music, entertainment and news. You can view the full list of apps and drill down by category

While Facebook hopes these new apps will keep you on its site longer, you can expect another change, too: a lot more noise in your Ticker and News Feed, and an influx of over-sharing.
Knowing your application settings is key to keep you from becoming that person in your circle of Facebook friends. Here's a look at the settings that are available for these new apps and how to adjust them.

Facebook Apps: Choose Your Settings Before You Download
For some, the process of quickly clicking through the Facebook app install prompts is automatic: If you're not paying attention, you'll miss the opportunity to set your privacy settings before you start using the app.
Below the app summary information when you first choose to download an app is an option: "Who can see activity from this app on Facebook." Depending on how you've set your default privacy settings--either public, friends or a custom setting--that will be the automatic setting for all your applications, unless you change it.
If you're interested in using an application but don't want your activity broadcast to your friends' News Feeds and Tickers, choose the "Only Me" option. While your activity will appear on your Timeline, no one else will be able to see it.

A new browser-based malware attack against Facebook users that's aimed at stealing money through e-cash payment system Ukash

Amit Klein, CTO at Trusteer, says this new variant on the Carberp Trojan tries to steal money by tricking victims into divulging payment information for the Ukash electronic voucher payment system.
According to Trusteer, the Carberp botnet malware works by replacing any Facebook page the user navigates to with a fake page that then tells the victim that the Facebook account is "temporarily locked," asking for personal information, such as name, e-mail, date of birth, password and a Ukash 20 Euro (about $25) voucher number to "confirm verification" of their identity and unlock the account.
This fake Facebook page then claims the cash voucher will be "added to the user's main Facebook account balance." This scam, says Klein, is the first spotted so far related to Facebook and the Ukash payment system, and Facebook users should recognize it and be wary if they see it.
"You should always be suspicious of odd or unconventional requests," Klein says.
